wow, I can't figure out who is the biggest nutcake, Fred Cook or his daughter! Let's face it Cook was both a fraud and a criminal. Cook clearly should have been shot after the McKinley climbing scam. That would have saved the world, and history, from this huge mess he spawned. Kibbles&bits1901

The "r" in the Crook's name is pretty funny and damn accurate! What a jerk off to history. Crook was one lying, stealing SOB! Should have been shot before he made so many people miserable. Congressman Fess nailed him -- "a perversion to history..." or some such. Bravo on the site! Rare to find this quality and quantity of verifiable material on the Internet.

I am a big supporter of Henson and Peary and I think this site is fabulous! There really needed to be something done about this Cook disgrace and the Herbert distortions to history! Bravo! I wish I could to read in tomorrow's paper that the Cook Society and Herbert had apologized for what they did and would fund a scholarship program with their ill gotten gains. No one else on the Internet, or in print, can say what needs to be said because of advertisers, etc. The damage done to these incredibly brave men who reached the Pole has become a source of international disgrace. But I saw the web published 1915 Fess speech to the US Congress and had no idea how vile Cook was! And the sentencing from Judge Killits--he knew Cook was hiding the money and would pass it on to his daughter. The judge was correct! How incredible that those stolen funds were used by Cook's con artist daughter to actually pay men to write this anti-Henson/Peary trash! Some publisher should grab this and make a book. Bravo!

I had an essay on Dr. Crook published in the journal of the Fart Institute of North America some time ago, which seems to have escaped everyone's notice, "Frederick Crook and the Fart Pole" Farctic, Vol. 3, No. 1 (June 1917) The Crook Society liked it a lot, but seemed to be at a loss for words to describe the exact odor. I could send you an electronic copy but have better things to do. Are you at all curious? I'm certainly curious to hear your view of what it smells like. If you'd like to use farts from it, you must ask the cheif fart of Farctic  for permission. Sir Anus, Quebec.

From: jess tauber <phonosemantics@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: Cook/Bridges Hi. Still phonosemantics@earthlink.net. I have no problem with your putting up my letter. It would be nice if I could get anti-Cook people to help with Yahgan language revitalization, but I guess that's just wishful thinking. Endangered language funding organizations have lots of competition for grants, and some believe Yahgan, with only two people, is too far gone. But the materials I have, though not as comprehensive as they might be (because Cook may have managed to lose the rest) are, combined with newly gleaned materials and the integration of all of them, adequate to bring the language back better than 95%, which is lots better than the situation Hebrew was in. One can always improvise the rest, as scholars did with the latter. So I keep trying to imagine possible linguistics-external funding sources, but I'm still scratching my head. Cook may not have been responsible in the end for all the losses- history is a bit fuzzy here- correspondence has been lost, German invasion of Belgium (where some of the materials may have been- there was unfortunately no inventory kept anywhere), etc. But Cook is the prime suspect. His pique at having been discovered trying to credit himself as author (when merely editor) of the dictionary @1908-9, combined with his personality, would have given him motive to destroy any evidence of his actions. We may never know. Jess Tauber phonosemantics@earthlink.net

Hello, I had just finished reading that disgust sham novel "The Navigator of New York" and I became curious as to how much of it could be true. That led me to my internet search and some quite detailed descriptions of the book written by Mr. Pearce - which I gather is the most fictitious look into the lives of both Cook and Peary. I was amazed first of all to discover that this feud actually existed- and obviously is still going on because of Cook's daughter. As a Nova Scotian, born in St. John's, Newfoundland,I can tell you that any Newfoundlander is not only goegrapically closer to the North ( if not actually in it ! ) but timewise we are linked to it by our not very distant ancestors- ( mine having had both fishing and sealing ships up until the 1930's ) I was also interested at how deceitfully Mr. Johnston worked in his fictional character, Devlin Stead, to tell this shameful racist, anti-establishment story. I understand why you yourself and all the anti-Cook people responding to your site are so vitriolic in your condemnation of the book. Yes it weaves together racism, hatred, lies and fiction, but I have read many other novels that have done the same. But if anything Mr. Johnston supports the fact that Cook lied about his achievements. Well, obviously then he didn't achieve anything except fraud. What I didn't know until I started researching was that it has become more and more fashionable for racist hate mongers to destroy Henson by asserting that Peary also did not really reach the pole. And even if we could ignore the Cookite propaganda about who did or did not reach the North Pole - or agree to disagree- there are certain things that are true about both men's conduct. Peary was an honest, hard working, long suffering, brilliant engineer who was a hero to his men and a legend to the Inuit. But Cook's character was so low that by today's standards he was disgusting. When you talk derisely about how an author might abuse artistic license and debase a public ( historical ) figure to promote his career, we must not forget the fun someone down the road will have with Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton. The way Peary treated his men and the Eskimos is amazingly enlightened for that time! Cook, calling them his "boreal pygmies" and taking advantage of them in trades for ivory while a passenger on a boozed up millionaire's yacht who made his money off of gambling parlors was more typical of that era. In fact, this man Bradley was later arrested in a gambling den scandal.  It may not be pleasant but one shouldn't try to rewrite history. By the way Frederick Cook was certainly not a real doctor. Cook, in his re-writing truth after the fact habit claimed he had treated Peary on at least two occasions. That is a laugh as what do you treat someone for with flu virus 100 years ago? Even today we have no cure. But Cook would take claim for anything that made him look even the slightest bit credible. And what I found most repulsive was what the novel did in showing ( if you ignore the fictional Devlin Stead )  how those two men's lives were interwoven over the course of years. It is a pity that the average reader would have no way of knowing how little Cook actually did and how very much Peary did. I think Cook was a passenger only twice in his entire life to the area where the Eskimos were, while Peary spent 18 years up there! And Cook's attempt to steal another person's accomplishments (his claims to have climbed McKinley, or independently have discovered the North Pole) has modern counterparts: that is, the two scientists who fought over being the first to discover the Aids virus. One man tried to steal the work of the other- and I am old enough to remember the controversy between Salk and Sabin over the polio vaccine. The difference in these examples are of men who were actually rivals. Cook was such a pathetic fraud that these comparisons really do not hold up. I guess what pleases me most is the extremely overdue , pardon the pun, polarization, of the views expressed on this site. After the vicious work of Cook and Vetters to get even with everyone who got in their way this site is a fitting and well deserved payback. And your coming from a country that embodies the freedom of speech makes it all the more fitting. Sincerely Philip Scrungery, Nova Scotia

What a marvelous website about that phony baloney cook. you call him "Crook" which is pretty funny and fitting. I am amazed at the people who think he was some kind of an "underdog" instead the scum scammer he really was. But mostly I get mad at the folks who think Peary did not reach the Pole. Peary, from all accounts, was a tough SOB but told the truth. A great shame that he was dragged down by these trust funded hateful cookies. Thanks for upholding the truth and having the talents to put all this on the web for free. Bless you!

Hi. I have a beef with "Dr." Cook, a personal one. For the past five years I've been working on Yahgan, a nearly extinct native language of Tierra del Fuego, now with only one elderly speaker left. ...<snip>... (see the full length, remarkable rant, in the letters section)... ...Frederick A. Cook, who may single-handedly have doomed a language to extinction. Nice addition to the resume, eh? Jess Tauber

Hello, today is Easter, 2003. I went to Dr. Crook's grave and he wasn't there! He had risen to heaven just like Jesus. So he did a lot more than only discover that winter hole on cape sparbo. That Cook mess was ridiculous from day 1 but the amazing thing is how it has become a magnet for every nasty nutcase on the planet. i think a lot of it is that "n" word thing--they just won't allow that a black man reached the pole. anyway keep the faith on this one and some day mainstream media will figure this one out the right way. do you think? P.T. Barnum actually never said "There's a sucker born every minute" yet people think he did. But the Vetters conspiracy has made suckers of countless people worldwide in terms of how the common public believes the Cook story. Janet Vetters and her Crook Society attempted to sensationalize what never should have been a controversy in the first place. Everything Cook and his daughter did was as clumsy, biased and bombastic as it was sophomoric. Cook was a con-artist who tried to drag down Peary until he, most likely, went insane. Cook had the common touch as a con man and poisoned middle America for years with his phony polar lectures on the vaudeville circuit. Both Cook and his daughter were "touched"! Peary's expeditions were a brilliant engineering feat and the National Geographic wised up fast after publishing both North Pole claims in their October, 1909 issue. Cook made fools of everyone and it is a wonder he wasn't run out of town. Cook had sex with Eskimo children as did Dr. Dederick and the Ohio State Archives now has his naked Eskimo girl photo collections on CD! Peary, Henson and even Captain Bartlett fathered several Inuit children with the women they loved during their years in the Smith Sound area. Those descendents, to this day, carry the great legends of Peary & Henson. But there is no "Cook" legend in their culture. Cook carried back several Eskimos, even a 12 year girls, in order to display them to the public and make some quick cash. He took the girl to a gynecologist meeting in Brooklyn--what a creep! Later, Cook abandoned them. Cook stole Inuit grave relics to sell back in New York to try and be accepted into society as a scientist! The man was a Brooklyn milkman for Gods sake! They laughed at him.  Cook was a reprehensible human being who deserved the scorn from society he suffered. Anyway, a brilliant web site--you are one of the few on the Internet who has your facts straight. Good job there fella. This site's kind of forensic historical analysis serves an important purpose. Perpetuation of ignorance on the scale that Vetters perverted American history should be dealt with exactly as you are doing. Thanks for the great public service this site is serving. Hopefully, one of these days, the media will wake up to the warning Congressman Fess made about Cook in 1915. Thomas Mayer

Interesting approach you took on the Navigator of New York. I have heard that novelists will put real people into their books as characters for cash payments. So why not the Cook Society pay an author to write a novel like that to promote the old crook? They have the big bucks.

I don't think you could have found anything better about which to be enraged. This Cook character seems like a bizarre waste of time and bile, but necessary to correct the mess he created! My God! These people are still polluting books and TV documentaries with that Cook nonsense that he reached the Pole and Peary conspired to cover it up! And, by the way, your reference to Cook's "two smelly Eskimo friends" is hilarious in the extreme. Firstly, the term "eskimo" is not a racist slur, but Cook calls them his "boreal pygmies" and "savage children." In fact Cook was a horrendous racist in general. Secondly, I doubt that a white man in a cave for a year, with the poor hygiene Cook was famous for, would smell any better. In fact Cook was described by others as "a dirty specimen." There is undoubtedly much truth in your comments, and the clearly biased, one-sided, conjecture-as-fact nature of your diatribe does the most brilliant job of balancing the vicious lies Janet Vetters set into motion. And what a stupid cause she had in the first place. Todd S., Vancouver

In school here in Oil City we are learning about the crook Cook. He sold bad oil stocks in Texas and was a compulsive liar. We watched the movie "Cook goes to Prison". It was a funny movie! I like the part where Amundsen came to see him and the guards caught them in his cell! I think my teacher is a cookie. She is trying to get us to believe that Cook wasn't such a bad guy because after he died they found oil in Texas, but he was a criminal. She is even making us do reports on the stupid subject! I have decided to write about how Peary really did reach the Pole with his friend Matthew Henson. From the things I have read I don't think Cook should even be in the history books, except maybe the history book of con men. Thanks for a great website! My daddy says "Thank God somebody on the Internet has the balls to tell the truth about that evil creep Crook. PS. did Nixon say "I'm not a crook", or "I'm not a Cook"? Hey, do you guys get that Polar Priorpenises rag from the Crooks? Want to organize a field trip?

Scene: The 2008 Cook Symposium at the Ohio State Byrd Polar Institute

* Stuff the attendance with hundreds of trained hecklers who would laugh, giggle, ask insane questions, ridicule the lecturers, etc.
* Have 20 people to dress up in prison stripes wearing Dr. Cook masks, offering reproductions of bogus oil stocks.
* Have groups of "poor rural folks" claim to be descendants of Cook's mail fraud victims who have organized to demand reparations from the Crook Society. Have them "get militant" about it with a lawyer on a bull horn demanding cash settlements.
* Set up a booth selling souveniers such as posters of the surface of the moon with a "Dr. Cook" ice axe in the frame, "Fake Peak" minatures with a little plastic figure of Fred holding an American Flag, etc.
* Have a university psychiatry instructor bring a graduate school class for a field study of delusional psychosis - complete with printed questionaries; "When did you first start believing Cook climbed Mt. McKinley?" "Do you believe in Bigfoot?"
* Pay a group of actors to attend who would pretend to be an "Ex-Cons for Fred" fan club. They could chain-smoke cigarettes, swig booze, talk dirty, and chant "FRED! FRED! FRED!" or shout "COOK RULES!" and sell T-shirts proclaiming "NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER STOP LYING!"
* Offer every media person within 100 miles a free pass, hotel room, and free meals.
* Hire a video crew, photographers, etc. to document the madness created by all this...pay several starving film students to produce competing documentaries without any official authorization from anyone.
* Pay 10 whores from Vegas to give free blow jobs to any member of the Crook Society
* Get hold of the credit card numbers for various Crook Society members and charge of all this stuff to their account.

I know people at HBO who might buy this for a special feature. Want to use my camper?

Hey! Great site. The Washburn book is cool but there another one about Denali that reprints Cook and Belmore Browne. I got one at Amazon.com - check it out and do a review. Keep up the roast - it is a fitting tribute to this situation.

Wednesday, February 20, 2002
01:48:24 AM

Good review of the Washburn book. But you're right - the old Cookites on the payroll will nit-pick all kinds of insignificant details...they already started…Washburn got Frederick Pohl mixed up with Frederick Pohl...so if he didn't know which Pohl was which, well then Dr. Cook must have scaled McKinley - see? You're on the right track, Robinson, that this is all really a study in evasive techniques in debating, denial of reality, and essentially the logic of a paid lobbyist who tells the congressmen that "tobacco isn't addictive...tobacco has not been proven to cause lung cancer because people get lung cancer who never smoked...etc." Dr. Cook was a master of remaining calm while denying every criticism the newspapers confronted him with. He demonstrates how easy it is to manipulate the media, and through them - the public. When a public figure tells a lie he can get away (in public opinion) as long as he or she keeps up a good front. Note the newspaper from Dec. 22, 1909 you posted - they headlined that Dr. Cook’s hiding was a sign of a guilty conscience. See? As soon as he ran away they were on him like a pack of dogs. You should publish more from that time period – most of his supporters publicly denounced him. What still amazes me is how he kept this up for months before he broke down. You should publish something on the comeback phase with the Hampton's "Dr. Cook's Confession” article and how he took his case to the Chautauqua circuit. Many people who were “friends of Cook” came forward to say they knew he was lying all the time, but hoped he was just “confused”. Have you seen that theory? It is a fact that many people stated that they thought the arctic journey had done something to his mind. Maybe Cook was insane? Also, you should follow up on recent findings about the sociopath personality types…some truly fascinating data. Do you see the parallels with the serial killer Bundy? Women loved him and adored Bundy because he was charming, handsome – heck; he even had a degree from Stanford University. Bundy got away with a lot because no one suspected him. They liked him – just the way people talk about your Dr. Cook. And Bundy was clever enough to escape from jail not once but twice – the second time he traveled clear across the USA and then killed that dorm full of girls in Florida. Amazing. So with Cook, I think you need to explore the psychopathology of criminals to compare with Cook. There is an under-explored area here of people who are criminal but can keep themselves out of jail…who are crazy yet smart enough to prevent authorities from incarcerating them. You may find Cook is a watershed for this area of public manipulation through the media. This is well known by professional politicians. Anyway – keep up your “public service” and we’ll send you any interesting documents we come across.
